When to visit Aranjuez

The best time to visit Aranjuez, month by month: real climate data, strawberries, festivals, autumn in the gardens and how to beat the summer heat.

Aranjuez has an inland Mediterranean climate: very hot summers, cold winters with frost, and rain mostly in autumn and spring. That shapes when it’s best to come.

Look at the lows: even in July they drop below 17 °C. Summer nights by the river are cool, and winter mornings are frosty.

Spring, March to June

The best time. The fruit trees in the Prince’s Garden blossom, the flowerbeds peak and in May comes the harvest of the Aranjuez strawberry, which lasts barely 30 to 40 days. It’s also asparagus season and Strawberry Train season. At the end of May come the Fiestas de San Fernando, for the town’s patron saint (30 May).

Summer, July and August

Proper heat: average highs of 34 °C. Go very early (the gardens open at 8:30), do the palace at midday and return to the river around sunset, when the gardens stay open late. Good time for the boat and canoes.

September

The first week brings the Mutiny Festival, of International Tourist Interest, with the re-enactment of the 1808 Mutiny by the palace and the Pirate Descent of the Tagus. Book accommodation early.

Autumn, October and November

The second great moment. The avenues of the Prince’s and Island gardens turn gold and ochre, the Strawberry Train runs its autumn season and the Early Music Festival fills the palace and theatre with concerts. October is also the wettest month: bring an umbrella.

Winter, December to February

Total calm and lovely low light in the gardens. The Parterre and Island fountains are off from December to February and the days are short: the gardens close around 18:30. A good time for the palace and the old town without the crowds.
