The Aranjuez bullring is one of Spain’s historic rings. It opened in 1797, under Charles IV, as part of the Royal Site’s great urban project, and it is still in use. Its plain, regular brick exterior matches the rest of the court town.
Inside, a bullfighting museum displays suits of lights, historic posters and bullfighters’ belongings. During the Mutiny Festival in September it hosts a Goyesque bullfight.
It rounds off a walk through the old town or the Teatro Real Carlos III, which is close by.
What few people tell you
- Its brick outer wall is a lesson in 18th-century architecture, with an almost military order of windows.
- From high up, the ring looks like a perfect circle among the roofs, with the palace behind.
