Toledo needs no introduction: the cathedral, the Alcázar, the synagogues, El Greco and an old town that has been a World Heritage Site since 1986. What many people don’t know is that it’s less than an hour from Aranjuez, and that the two cities share a river: the Tagus that loops around Toledo is the same one that flows past the palace.
Without a car the connection isn’t direct: there’s no train between Aranjuez and Toledo, so the road is the practical option. With a car, Aranjuez is an excellent base for Toledo, Chinchón and Ocaña on different days.
What few people tell you
- The same river links both cities: the Tagus that runs past the palace of Aranjuez is the one that loops around Toledo.
- Staying in Aranjuez and visiting Toledo and Chinchón on different days means coming back each night to a quiet town, away from the crowds.
